How to fix common printing issues

Printing digital coloring pages should be quick and easy, but it doesn’t always go smoothly. From low-quality prints to missing parts of the design, small mistakes in your setup can lead to wasted ink, paper, and time.

This guide covers the most common printing issues—what causes them and exactly how to fix them.

Issue 1: Blurry or Pixelated Prints

What’s happening:
Your page prints with soft or fuzzy lines, making it hard to color inside the artwork.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Low-Resolution File: Always use high-resolution files (300 DPI recommended). If the source file is low quality, it will print that way—no printer setting can fix it.
  • Incorrect Scaling: Avoid selecting “Fit to Page” if it stretches the image. Try using “Actual Size” or manually reduce the scale percentage to prevent distortion.
  • Draft Print Setting: Check your printer settings and switch from “Draft” or “Economy” mode to “Standard” or “High Quality.”
Issue 2: Parts of the Image Are Cut Off (Cropped)

What’s happening:
Edges of the design are missing, or content is pushed off-center.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Paper Size Mismatch: Make sure your file matches your paper (e.g., A4 vs. US Letter). Set the correct paper size in your printer settings.
  • Scaling Issues: Use the “Fit to Printable Area” or “Shrink to Fit” options. Avoid “Actual Size” if the image is slightly too large for your margins.
  • Margins Too Small: If your printer doesn’t support borderless printing, it will automatically add margins. Adjust scaling to leave extra space around the edges.
Issue 3: Misaligned Prints

What’s happening:
Designs are not centered, or the front and back don’t line up when printing double-sided.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Manual Feed Misalignment: Feed the paper carefully and consistently, especially for double-sided prints.
  • Printer Driver Glitch: Update your printer driver or restart your printer to reset any memory conflicts.
  • Manual Duplex Printing: Flip the pages consistently in the same direction. Refer to your printer’s duplex instructions to ensure the back prints in the correct orientation.
Issue 4: Colors Don’t Match the Screen

What’s happening:
Printed colors look dull, off-shade, or completely different from what you saw on your device.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Monitor vs. Printer Display: Colors may appear more vibrant on-screen. Print a test page to preview how colors translate.
  • Ink Settings: Make sure you’re printing in color mode, not grayscale. Some settings default to black and white.
  • Low Ink: Replace low or expired cartridges to avoid inconsistent tones.
  • Use the Right Paper: Matte paper can mute colors, while glossy paper enhances them. Choose paper based on your desired finish.
Issue 5: Smudging or Ink Transfer

What’s happening:
Ink doesn’t dry properly, causing smears or marks on the page or printer rollers.

Causes and Fixes:

  • Dry Time: Allow pages to dry fully before stacking or flipping. If using an inkjet, enable “Extra Dry Time” in your print settings.
  • Paper Type Mismatch: Set your printer to match the paper type (e.g., heavyweight, glossy, cardstock). This controls ink output.
  • Humidity: Store paper in a cool, dry space to prevent moisture absorption, which affects how ink behaves.

A perfect print starts with the right file, settings, and materials. By adjusting just a few options in your printer or PDF viewer, you can avoid the most common frustrations and get consistently clean, sharp results every time.
